Bachelor of General Studies

Criminal Investigation Option

Entrance Requirements:

  • Minimum three years experience as a general duty police officer, including status as a first-class constable. (transfers as 22 lower-level crim credits)
  • 30 post secondary credits (22 of which can include transfer credits as noted above) including 3 credits of English Composition or other writing course.
  • Two references, one of whom can attest to the applicant’s ability to succeed academically, and another who can attest to the applicant’s potential as a police investigator.
  • Statement of Intent (approx. 300 words).
  • Note that additional credits may qualify as equivalent to courses noted below (as determined by the registrar)

Lower Level Requirements (52 credits):

  • 3 credits – Selected from any one of English 105, 210, Communications 125, 155, 250 or equivalent
  • 6 credits – Selected from any of Psychology, Philosophy or Math
  • 6 credits – Selected from any of Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology , History, Latin American Studies, Economics
  • 6 credits – Selected from any of Art History, Visual Arts, Theatre, Modern Languages (e.g. French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Russian), English (except English 105 or 210)
  • 3 credits – Crim 103 (Introduction to the Criminal Justice System)
  • 3 credits – Crim 220 (Research Methods in Criminology)
  • 3 credits – Crim 205 (Police Psychology & Risk Assessment)
  • 4 credits – Bio 270 (Intro to Forensic Biology)
  • 3 credits – Crim 261 (Investigative Interviewing) ***
  • 12 credits – Any combination of Crim 221, Crim 291 – Crim 299 (see description in Appendix A)
  • 3 credits – Any 100/200 level (non-police) university transfer credit course

Upper Level Requirements (46 credits):

  • 3 credits – Crim 393 (Criminal Intelligence and Crime Analysis)
  • 6 credits – Crim 391 (Major Case Management) ***
  • 4 credits – Bio 470 (Advanced Forensic Biology)
  • 3 credits – Crim 330 (Criminal Procedure and Evidence)
  • 3 credits – Crim 335 (Human Rights and Civil Liberties)
  • 3 credits – Crim 311 (Multiculturalism, Conflict, and Social Justice)
  • 3 credits – Crim 339 (Ethics in Criminal Justice )
  • 3 credits – Crim 430 (Advanced Criminal Procedure and Evidence)
  • 6 credits – Any two of Crim 410 - Crim 419, Crim 392, Crim 394 (see description in Appendix A)
  • 6 credits – Crim 421 (Research Project)
  • 6 credits – Crim 480 (Field Work Practicum)
* Block Transfers to Crim 129, 151, 160, 201, 203, 230, and 280 from RCMP M201 & RCMP M203
