Managing High Rises
A Systems Approach for the Fire Service

Management of high rise incidents can be chaotic and complex. The Surrey Fire Service and the University of the Fraser Valley have sponsored this seminar to stimulate an exchange of ideas and best practices, and to identify research and policy needs related to managing high rise fi res. A key focus will be on the importance of developing a systems approach.

By gathering a mix of academics, experienced practitioners and decision-makers, the intent is that attendees will leave with a vision of not only “what to do,” but “how to do it.” The seminar will include effective and proven operational procedures.

Symposium topics

The symposium will address the four target areas below and defi ne the importance of unifying
these four areas:

Public safety research and development best practices

  • Trends, best practices and fact-based decision making.
  • Quantitative risk-evaluation models that will help you develop a Risk-Hazard-Vulnerability profi le for your community.

Operations

  • Strategic and tactical techniques and equipment.
  • Issues pertaining to resources, such as apparatus, equipment and personnel.
  • Managing incidents with limited resources.

Training

  • Training of fire personnel as well as high-rise building occupants, managers, strata councils etc.
  • The value of After Action Discussions. A template of an After Action Discussion Paper will be provided. You will leave this session with proven lesson plans, supporting PowerPoint slides and operational guidelines.

Prevention

  • Day-to-day living with high-rise buildings in your community. Detailed plan and method for educating high-rise occupants will be provided.

Registration

Cost: $225 plus tax per person, payable upon registration. Includes lunch and refreshments. Register before July 1, 2010 and pay only the GST! HST will apply after July 1, 2010.
