A brief history

The Diaspora Studies Consortium was founded in 2009 (originally known in Canada as the Diaspora Education Consortium, and in Europe as the Diaspora Project Consortium). Its objectives comprise the promotion of student interest in diaspora studies, international student and faculty exchange, research cooperation, exchange about faculty’s pedagogical approaches, as well as the strengthening of networks between the diaspora studies academic community and relevant organisations or individuals in the wider community, such as NGOs, cultural groups, arts associations, religious organizations, and immigrant associations.

At present, participant faculty come from the following disciplines: Anthropology, English, Geography, History, Political Science, Postcolonial Studies, Language and Literature, and Sociology. We hope to extend the program to other universities and disciplines in future.

The DSC receives substantial external funding from the European Union and the Government of Canada. The first phase of the project will end in 2012; however, we are committed to ensuring sustainability on an ongoing basis far beyond this date.
