Learner Role
Learning is a dynamic, creative process facilitated by an atmosphere of acceptance where each partner shares in the development of the learning environment. Integral to learning is critical thinking and reflection and the active participation of the learner. Learners in the UFV Nursing Program are active partners in their ongoing development and preparation for the role of nurse. Program experiences require self-directed learners who take initiative in acquiring requisite knowledge and skills. Successful progression through the program requires the student to engage in numerous activities such as class preparation and participation, completion of assignments, and ongoing critical self-reflection.
Program Workload
The Nursing Program is very demanding. Students find the course load challenging and time consuming. A full course load does not allow time for employment, either full-time or part-time. It is strongly recommended that students plan for sufficient financial resources so that employment will not be necessary. Students are scheduled in class or clinical five full days a week and spend, on average, three to four hours each evening and 12 to 14 hours on the weekends completing class/clinical preparation and/or assignments. Good time management skills are critical to achieving the various program requirements.
Stress
The intensity and demand of the Nursing Program can directly affect students’ stress level. Managing the workload and various commitments of the program requires energy and effective time management skills, particularly while trying to juggle other roles and responsibilities. Monitoring your stress level and overall well being is essential to pacing yourself and coping with the demands of the program. Students need to be mindful of limiting other commitments while assuming a full-time student workload. It is also important to schedule in some time for relaxing and enjoyable activities that will facilitate a reduction of stress and reward all your hard work. | |
