Research: For his PhD dissertation, Chris Leach analyzed representations of the British Army and colonial warfare in late Victorian and Edwardian popular culture. In novels, music hall performances, spectacles, parades, toys, papers and journals the army and warfare were prominently featured with a superficial accuracy. Of course, much of the reality of army life and campaigning was misrepresented and may have led to part of the enthusiasm for war in 1914. Chris has presented papers at the Qualicum History Conference in 2003 and 2004 on related subjects.
