UFV History Peer Mentoring Programme

Whether you are a new student or nearing graduation, there is a place for you in the UFV History Department’s NEW Peer Mentoring Program!

Our program aims to match 1st and 2nd year students with experienced 3rd and 4th year students in a mutually enriching mentor-mentee relationship. For new students, the experienced mentor will use their knowledge of UFV, history, and life in general to help you find your way in the often confusing and stressful university environment. For the experienced mentor, this program will provide you with invaluable leadership experience, workshops to build on your skills, and the opportunity to give back to your university.

What is a mentor?

Literally, a mentor is a wise and trusted advisor, and in the context of this program you will be just that. The boundaries of each individual mentoring relationship will depend on the needs of its participants, but the goal is to help your mentee to survive and succeed in the world of academia. Your mentee will know that you are a person that they can turn to with questions about how to apply for student loans, where to find writing help, or how to approach an instructor with a problem. Yet the relationship does not stop at the doors of the university; a mentee may ask for advice on how to balance work and study schedules, what kinds of volunteer activities are available, or even where to get the best pizza in town.

A mentor is not intended to be a tutor for his or her mentee, but a certain amount of tutor-type interaction may occur within the relationship. Mentees may ask for help in learning how to do research, how to properly cite sources, how to take useful notes, or they may just need a sounding board for their ideas.

What is a mentee?

Literally, a mentee is a person under the patronage, protection, or care of someone interested in his or her career or welfare. The boundaries of each individual mentoring relationship will depend on the needs of its participants, but the goal of your mentor is to help you to survive and succeed in the world of academia.
