Historica, Your Place in History Historica Fairs School Program
On May 3 & 4th one hundred twenty students from throughout the Fraser Valley will be in Abbotsford to present their projects on Canadian heritage topics. The event is part of the national Historica program which promotes pride and understanding of Canadian heritage. Students, in grades four through nine, represent public, private and home school groups from Agassiz to Maple Ridge.
The Regional Fair is held in the Student Activity Centre at UCFV and is organized by the MSA Museum Society with support from the History Department of UCFV. Student delegates will display their projects, participate in heritage workshops and undergo an evaluation process. Two students will receive the opportunity to attend the National Historica Fair in Lethbridge, Alberta in July. Many others will be recipients of awards sponsored by local and national organizations.
The public is invited to visit the Fair on Thursday evening from 7:30 to 8:30 pm and Friday from 9:00 to 3:00 pm. They will be impressed by the work of these young students who have conducted research and consulted experts to produce projects that are interesting and engaging. Many will be in costume, some will perform songs or dances, and others have created models or produced videos as they bring their story about Canada to life. Project titles include “Flight 810 Western Canada’s Worst Air Crash”, “Fraser Valley Flood”, “Superman Eh?” the “Komagata Maru” and “Canadian Peacekeeping”. Many students compile their own family histories and learn more about their fascinating family ancestors, such as great, great, great, Aunt Jenny who founded Butchart Gardens.
On Thursday visitors will see a performance by Abbotsford’s Yevshan Dance Group and a delightful group of students from WA Fraser Middle School role playing some of Canada’s Greatest Canadians. Bring your camera and have your picture taken with Ernie Coombs (Mr. Dressup), Pierre Trudeau, Karen Kain and other Canadian luminaries. On Friday student delegates will attend a series of heritage workshops which includes a presentation on Emily Carr by Canadian folk artist, Maxwell Newhouse. Visitors will enjoy the student projects and a selection of community group interactive displays including the Power House at Stave Falls, Fraser Valley Antique Farm Machinery Association and Abbotsford Toy and Model Soldier Collectors.
The Fraser Valley Regional Fair is one of twelve fairs held in the province and over one thousand Regional Fairs held across the country. In July, each province and territory will send a delegation of students with their projects to the non-competitive National Fair in Lethbridge. These 165 students will enjoy a weeklong heritage camp, have the opportunity to bond with peers from across the country, and participate in a public showcase of their work.
The Historica Fair in the Fraser Valley region will take place on: May 3th and 4th University College of the Fraser Valley Student Activity Centre 33844 King Road, Abbotsford
