Library Technician Post-Diploma Certificate

The library technician post-diploma certificate is a part time program designed for library technicians seeking continuing education opportunities that directly address issues relating to their profession. Offered jointly with the Library and Information Technology and Continuing Studies departments, this program is specifically designed to meet the needs of working professionals.

All courses are offered online in an 8 week format. Each course is worth 2 upper level credits. Each course is limited to 20 students.  Courses which have wait lists will be offered again as soon as possible.

Winter 2012

LIBT 385: Information Rights: Privacy and Freedoms
Instructor: Christina Neigel
Duration: March 5 to April 27, 2012, online

This course will examine how information rights can shape the services provided in information centres. The digitization of information and shifting formats creates numerous uncertainties and tensions between information privacy and access. Students will look at information privacy and freedom on information legislation, issues relating to censorship, and the ethics of providing fair and equitable access. Students will also have the opportunity to focus their studies on specific aspects of information rights as it relates to their own employment situations. 


LIBT 381: Leadership for Library Technicians
Instructor: Christina Neigel
Duration: postponed until Summer 2012 or Fall 2012 - watch for announcements.

This course will examine various aspects to effective leadership within the context of information work. Students will develop skills and knowledge that will assist them in providing vision and guidance for others. In examination of the benefits of change, students will also learn how to delegate decision-making and build trust with others through role modeling, mentorship, and coaching.



How to Apply

Applications are accepted on a continuing basis for the next available semester.

Students can choose to apply online, by mail or in person. Instructions for applying to UFV can be found at www.ufv.ca and following the instructions under Future Students.

The application, $45.00 application fee and an official transcript showing graduation from a recognized Library Technician program (sent directly from the issuing institution to the UFV Admissions department) must be received in order for the application to be considered complete.

Once accepted into the LIBIT Post-Diploma Certificate program, students will be given permission to register in the courses.

Applications for Winter 2012 are being accepted. There are a few spaces available in LIBT 385 which starts in March. Apply quickly to avoid disappointment!

NOTE: If you have already taken one of the Continuing education for Graduate Library Technicians courses, you have been automatically accepted into the Library Technician Post-Diploma certificate program and should be able to register for any of the courses.
