How do media and audiences affect each other, and how does this relationship make for a better or a worse society?
Prerequisites: NONE CRN: 11182 Wednesdays 4:00 - 6:50PM Darren Blakeborough
Media and Communications Studies focuses on the way that information is produced and used to create and influence public opinion about issues that affect our daily lives.
Students will learn about all media industries, including the internet, and how they are changing. They will learn how people are affected by advertising and other commercial images, how Canadians "fit" in the global village, and what literacy in the new media means; in short, they will learn how our lives and society are changing in response to communication innovations.
The discipline strives to teach students to develop a considered and balanced perspective about how to use communication technology to best serve the public good.
UFV offers a minor in Media and Communications Studies as part of its BA program, as well as a two-year Associate of Arts degree. Students may ladder into the BA program (into the MACS minor) from the Associate of Arts degree. Students who have completed an Associate of Arts in MACS may also transfer to another institution such as Simon Fraser University or Royal Roads University to complete their BA. In this regard, UFV has signed a memorandum of understanding with Royal Roads to facilitate the transfer of students with the MACS Associate of Arts degree into their BA in Professional Communication.
Graduates pursue varied career paths including media management, public relations, events management, fund-raising, social advocacy, advertising, and web entrepreneurship.
