BC Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Course description: Adult Basic Education (ABE) -- also known as Adult Upgrading, High School Completion, College or University Preparation, and Career Prep -- is an educational program that allows students to ...
- complete prerequisite courses for post-secondary programs;
- upgrade their basic literacy skills;
- complete specific courses to earn course completion certificates;
- complete high school to earn the BC adult graduation diploma (Adult Dogwood);
- prepare for the General Educational Development (GED) high school equivalency test;
- meet employment requirements;
- upgrade their skills for entry into the work force;
- enter college or university programs; or
- improve skills for personal benefit.
ABE courses and programs follow the guidelines and requirements established by the Ministry of Advanced Education. Course scheduling and location: Courses within the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program are offered during all semester (Fall, Winter, & Summer). Courses are offered at the Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, and Hope campuses. Summer semester courses are only offered at the Abbotsford and Chilliwack campuses. The Four levels of BC's ABE Program
There are four levels to BC's ABE program: Fundamental, Intermediate, Advanced, and Provincial level ABE courses.
Fundamental level courses...
- help students bring their skills up to the Grade 8 level
- include reading, writing, spelling, and math
Intermediate level courses...
- help students bring their skills up to a Grade 10 level

include English, math, science, and social studies

meet the entry requirement for many vocational programs
Advanced level courses...
Provincial level courses...
- are equivalent to Grade 12
- include English, math, biology, chemistry, physics, and computer studies
- qualify students for the provincially recognized Adult Dogwood diploma
