AI at UFV

Learn with AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be a powerful tool for learning and research — but using it responsibly is key. Whether you’re writing, researching, or brainstorming ideas, make sure you understand your instructor’s expectations and follow UFV’s academic integrity standards.

Understanding AI in your courses

AI use at UFV varies by course and instructor. There is no university-wide policy, so always check what applies to you.

Check your syllabus

Review your course carefully to understand expectations around AI use and academic integrity before starting assignments.

Ask your instructor

If you are unsure whether AI tools are allowed for an assignment or activity, always ask your instructor. Each instructor sets their own guidelines on AI use.

Respect academic integrity

Using AI when it is not permitted can be considered academic misconduct. Always follow UFV Policy 70 and cite any AI tools you use in your work.

Review assignment guidelines

Assignment instructions may include details on when and how AI can be used.

How to use AI at UFV

Please note that AI writing tools may support your learning, but the final work you submit must be your own, reflecting your ideas, your voice and tone, and your independent academic work.

Tips for responsible and ethical AI use

1

Permission is Key

There is no university-wide policy on AI use; individual instructors decide if AI is permitted in their courses.

2

Check your syllabus

The course syllabus is the primary place to find your instructor’s AI policy, often under course expectations. When in doubt, check with your instructor before using AI in your coursework.

3

Review assignment guidelines

If AI is allowed for specific assignments, guidelines will detail the acceptable use.

4

Academic integrity

Using AI when it is not permitted for an assignment may be considered academic misconduct, including cheating or plagiarism. Always follow your instructor's guidelines and UFV Policy 70 - Student Academic Misconduct

5

Protecting privacy

Avoid entering compromising and personal information into GenAI tools, such as names, addresses, or credit card numbers.

6

Citing AI

If you use AI in your work, you must properly cite it. Check out examples here.

7

Track your AI use

If you use AI for an assignment, keep simple notes or screenshots of the AI tool used, the purpose of use, what the AI tool was asked, and what the tool returned. This helps explain your process and use of AI, if your instructor asks.
