Community Health and Social Innovation (CHASI) Hub

Research philosophy

As a prolific research centre and UFV’s Changemaking Hub, CHASI is always focused on serving our communities. That means:

With evidence-informed, timely responses to the issues facing us all, we can empower our communities to thrive. Our researchers from across disciplines all share a passion for social justice, a focus on community, and a drive to make tangible impacts.

How community partners inform our work

Our work is highly collaborative, and each project is shaped by the needs and interests of our community partners, the expertise of our team, and the passion of our students. The video below shows just one example of how aproject was shaped by the needs of our partner, and how that project shaped one student employee's perspective in return.

Students role at CHASI

CHASI’s students are a huge part of what makes our work special. Every project involves students from conception to completion. Our structure ensures that each students’ experience is tailored to their interests, makes use of their unique skills, and pushes them to grow towards their academic/professional goals.

Below, you’ll find answers to some questions you might have about the team of students. If your question isn’t answered, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

How can I/my student work with CHASI?

We love to hear from interested students. Feel free to email us or come by our office — located at B164 on UFV’s Abbotsford campus — if you want to chat.

If you’re ready to apply, please fill out our CHASI application form. While we aren’t always hiring, this is the first place we’ll check when we have an opening.

What majors does CHASI hire students from?

Any of them! We understand that the knowledge and skills developed in other fields is transferable and can often provide new perspectives. Our projects also cover a wide range of topics, so majors that bring knowledge of a new field are always welcome.

In addition to our research team, we also have a Knowledge Mobilization Team, whose work in design, video, photography, social media, and more supports our research work.

Does CHASI pay students for their work?

Yes. We believe students deserve to be compensated for their time and hard work, and our regular student employees are all paid above minimum wage.

How long can students work at CHASI for?

Students are hired on a contract basis semester-to-semester. Many students have their contracts renewed multiple times to stay at CHASI for a year or more, and some stay for a period after graduation. Most full-time members of our team also joined CHASI as students or recent graduates.

How are students supervised at CHASI?

Students work under the supervision of the Lead Researcher or Communications and Design Specialist, while collaborating with the director, graphic designer, researchers, and fellow students. Students are encouraged to expand their skills and engage with projects that align with their academic/professional interests. Mentorship from their supervisor and peers helps them develop and grow.

What will students learn at CHASI?

All students will gain professional workplace experience in an academic research setting and opportunities to meet and work alongside community and government partners. Specific skills depend on the role of the students:

  • Student research assistants can expect to gain hands-on experience in research methods (qualitative and quantitative), community engagement, grant applications, ethics approval, and the presentation of research.

  • Knowledge mobilization interns can expect to develop their skills in the field they are hired for (i.e. graphic design, social media, illustration) using professional software and equipment. They will expand their portfolio with high-quality, real-world products, and practice liaising with internal and external clients to meet their needs.
