email JohnChef John Garrett is an award-winning Red Seal Chef and Assistant Professor of Culinary Arts at the University of the Fraser Valley, bringing over 35 years of experience in the hospitality industry. As Executive Chef of the acclaimed Horizons Restaurant, Chef Garrett built a reputation for culinary excellence, earning multiple Best Fine Dining awards and authoring the celebrated cookbook Horizons.
Throughout a distinguished career, Chef Garrett has contributed extensively to the profession, serving as a Chef Assessor and Training Venue Auditor with SkilledTradesBC, as well as a culinary judge for Skills Canada competitions. He has mentored numerous UFV students to success at both provincial and national levels, demonstrating a strong commitment to student achievement and industry excellence.
Recognized as a leader in the field, Chef Garrett was selected to represent British Columbia in Ottawa, where he contributed to the development of Canada’s Red Seal Occupational Standard for Cooks—helping define the national benchmark for culinary training and certification.
Passionate about preparing the next generation of chefs, Chef Garrett emphasizes hands-on learning, industry mentorship, and real-world kitchen experience. Having hired, trained, and mentored hundreds of culinary professionals, he brings invaluable industry insight, leadership, and connections into the classroom, equipping graduates with the skills, confidence, and professionalism needed to succeed in today’s dynamic culinary industry.
