Launch a career in architectural drafting
Do you have an eye for detail and excellent spatial ability?
Architectural drafting may be the career for you. Drafters work behind the scenes to create technical drawings and plans based on sketches, specifications or notes made by architects, engineers, surveyors or other industry professionals. They use advanced computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) software to bring designs to life.
UFV's intensive, ten-month Architectural Drafting program fully equips you to prepare drawings for residential and commercial buildings. You apply drafting and design techniques and learn to understand industry standards and building codes. You use surveying equipment in the field and practice the art of making essential measurements and calculations. You also learn to use AutoCAD to design accurate building plans.
Our knowledgeable instructors create an environment patterned after the working world. You get to solve real design problems and you are encouraged to develop your creative talents and techniques beyond the level demanded of a junior draftsperson.
This program is specially designed to prepare you for entry-level drafting positions in the architectural, civil, and related fields. It equips you for employment in private design firms, public agencies, or departments which provide design and drafting services in architectural, civil, and related engineering fields. It is also excellent preparation for continuing your education in the field of architecture.
According to WorkBC, the unemployment rate for architectural drafters is very low. Given the anticipated gains in the construction industry in British Columbia, combined with older workers moving into retirement, job stability is excellent for people in this occupation and demand is steadily growing.
The best opportunities should arise for architectural drafters with experience and formal training using computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) technology. Experienced drafters may advance to positions of senior designer, drafter, or supervisor.
