After the Flood: Community Response & Recovery

This project invited those directly impacted by the Abbotsford floods in 2021 to describe their experiences through a survey instrument, interviews, and focus groups with the goal to understanding how community members can be supported in recovery and the community can enhance disaster resiliency and preparedness.

The Materiality of Mental Health at the Morrissey World War I Internment Camp

Dr. Sarah Beaulieu’s research focuses on the Morrissey Internment Camp, one of Canada’s 24 World War I internment camps, with the aim of using the material culture record at the camp as a point of access to examine the coping strategies prisoners of war adopted to help mitigate mental-health issues triggered by confinement.

Fragments of History: Unearthing the stories and artefacts of Monashee internment camp

This multi-faceted initiative involved the Monashee Internment Camp excavation, archival research and interviews culminating in the creation of the documentary.

Social Justice

Comic: Our Charmed Circle

Our Charmed Circle shares the story of four friends connected across the continent by a shared enthusiasm for gaming and bound by a sense of solidarity. With this comic, CHASI and artist Sharon Strauss aim to explore the issues we face, the world we live in, and how we find the strength to forge an identity in an ever-changing political landscape.

The Laramie Project Digital Art Competition

Partners: UFV School of Creative Arts

In winter 2023, UFV Theatre performed a production of The Laramie Project, a play relating the aftermath of the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man, in Laramie, Wyoming, in 1998. In support, CHASI coordinated the Laramie Project Digital Art Competition, which offered students a chance to share artwork inspired by Matthew’s legacy.

BLM Social Justice Art Project

Four Fraser Valley artists created a series of paintings with a clear focus on increasing awareness of the systemic racism faced by Black people and inspiring concrete action to tackle its existence globally and locally, and CHASI had the opportunity to document their inspirations and experiences.

Faces of Resilience

CHASI's art exhibit Faces of Resilience, by former graphic design intern Celina Koops, was created for observances such as National Indigenous History Month and International Women’s Day. The art hung in the CHASI Hub, bringing life, colour, and inspiration to our team.

Revealing Systemic Racism & Inequalities in BC: Using disaggregated demographic and race-based data

Partner: BC’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner, UFV’s Race and Antiracism Network, and the South Asian Studies Institute

CHASI and its partners presented a talk from representatives of the BCOHR, which advocated for governmental use of disaggregated data such as race-based data to “illuminate systemic inequalities and injustices.”

Wellness and Connectedness in White Rock During COVID-19

An exploration of the strengths and limitations of White Rock’s wellness programming for older adults, with the principal goal being to effectively support population health and experiences of wellness for older residents during and beyond the pandemic.

The Utility of Physician Referred Outdoor Physical Activity for South Asian Women

Partners: Divisions of Family Practice, City of Abbotsford Recreation, Parks and Culture 

This report examines how outdoor group-based physical activity—recommended by a physician and carried out with other South Asian women—may be an opportunity to improve physical activity in a community that reports low levels of physical activity and is also uniquely affected by higher rates of diabetes and heart disease.
