Biography

Dr. Shelley Canning is a Professor of Nursing at the University of the Fraser Valley and the Director of UFV’s Centre for Education and Research on Ageing (CERA).

Dr. Canning completed her PhD at the School of Nursing at UBC where her dissertation research explored issues of engagement, meaning, and quality of life for older adults with advanced dementia living in long-term care homes. She obtained her BSN (hons) and MSN from UBC; prior to this she completed a BSc and secondary school teaching certificate (subjects: Chemistry and Literature) at the University of Victoria. She worked in direct care nursing practice at BC Cancer (i.e. caring for in-patient acute oncology patients) and Fraser Health (i.e. community health in Abbotsford and Chilliwack). Dr. Canning has been a faculty member at UFV since 2006 teaching gerontology and research methods courses. Her teaching aims to support best practices with a focus on the care of older people including those living with dementia. She also seeks to build an understanding of the important role of research in ensuring evidence-informed practice. She has supervised many undergraduate nursing students in completing research projects through Direct Study courses. Dr. Canning's service has included engagement in a variety of departmental and institutional committees including serving 2 terms as a member of the UFV Board of Governors, and eight years as a UFV Senator including Chairing the Senate Research Committee for six years. Dr. Canning has established a research programme with funded studies focused on improving understandings and care practices related to older adults and people living with dementia. She has led several multi-disciplinary and multiple site studies. Finally, she has shared her research widely across local, national, and international conferences, and provided meaningful research experiences for many UFV nursing students.

Teaching Philosophy

In considering the diversity among my students my teaching philosophy centres on a relational approach. I believe that the teacher-student relationship is the most critical factor determining success in teaching and learning. I believe creating teacher-student relationships based on trust and respect, while ensuring a context of safety is critical for engaging students and supporting their learning and success. I believe that the interplay between diversity of content, concepts, and context requires a thoughtful choice among diverse pedagogical options. Regardless of the material to be taught or the teaching strategy chosen, I believe it is the relationship I create and maintain with my students that is the most important factor in determining my success in teaching.
