email MandeepI am an assistant professor in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at UFV. I specialize in step-down surgical nursing. My clinical background encompasses a range of surgical sub-specialties, including thoracics, ENT, plastics, general surgery, urology, and gynecology.
As an educator, I am dedicated to guiding students in their nursing education. I have worked as a teaching assistant for the UVic BSN program while completing my master’s and as a sessional clinical instructor. A key component of my professional career has been the mentorship of numerous nursing preceptorship students. I am passionate about supporting students as they apply evidence-based practice, enhance their critical thinking, and hone their clinical judgment in real-world settings.
Beyond my academic and clinical commitments, I prioritize a philosophy of work-life balance. I value spending time with family and friends, and enjoy reading, baking, and travelling.
Master of Nursing from the University of Victoria (graduated April 2025)
High Acuity and Telemetry from BCIT (2018)
Bachelor of Nursing (honours) from Langara College (graduated in April 2016)
Bachelor of Science in Biology (focus on molecules, cells, and physiology) from Simon Fraser University (graduated in April 2012).
British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)
My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that nursing education must be an active, experiential journey that effectively bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and authentic clinical practice. Drawing from my own professional nursing experience and education, I strive to cultivate a learning environment that is both rigorous and deeply supportive, preparing students to become thoughtful, resilient, and evidence-based practitioners.
The core tenants of my teaching philosophy include the fostering of skill mastery in a controlled environment, and cultivating clinical judgment in specialized settings, such as clinical. Furthermore, I am committed to leveraging simulation for critical thinking development. To achieve these core tenants, the transition from safe space to brave space is necessary so students can feel empowered to move from passive learning, into active, experiential learning. This will ideally help students develop resilience, and forge their own professional identity.
For classroom teaching focus, I enjoy teaching nursing labs. Being able to introduce students to new skills, while including theory, in a controlled environment has been very fulfilling as an educator. For clinical teaching, my interest is in surgical settings, including step-down surgical areas. In regard to my professional teaching interests, I am interested in exploring simulation pedagogy in nursing. Simulation can be a fantastic tool in nursing education to help students develop critical thinking and clinical decision making.
I am interested in researching the effective integration of high-fidelity simulation to create highly realistic and relevant scenarios that bridge the gap between classroom and/or lab learning, and authentic clinical practice.
A key area of inquiry that I am interested in is the educational transition from "safe space" to "brave space" within the nursing curriculum. I would like to explore strategies that foster a learning environment where students feel empowered to move beyond passive learning and truly participate in active, experiential learning, challenging themselves while developing resilience and professional identity. Along with this, I would like to maintain a strong professional interest in advancing best practices and education within the specialized field of surgical nursing.
I am a Nurse Navigator for the Surgical Patient Optimization Clinic (SPOC) for the Fraser Health Authority. This a dynamic and patient-centred role dedicated to ensuring individuals undergoing complex procedures are in their optimal state of health for the best possible outcomes and recovery. This clinic takes an interdisciplinary approach. I work alongside dedicated professionals, including a Registered Dietitian, Speech Language Pathologist, Physiotherapist, and an Anesthesiologist. Together, we provide pre-operative education and post-operative follow-up for patients preparing for complex surgeries. Our patients may undergo one of the following procedures: gasterectomy, esophagectomy, ENT procedures (glossectomy, neck dissection, largyngectomy). This opportunity allows for patient advocacy, and is essential for patients and their families to make informed decisions.
