Electric vehicle parking on campus

Fees will be introduced to EV Charging Stations beginning July 1, 2026.
To read more about why this change is occurring and details on fees, please see the FAQs below.

Important Notice: EV Chargers Temporarily Unavailable on the Abbotsford Campus

The chargers located outside Buildings A and C will remain off until upgrades are made in building electrical rooms. It is expected that will take place in late 2026. We appreciate your patience as we ensure our systems can meet the electricity demands for these chargers. The BC Hydro Chargers and ChargePoint Chargers in Lot 10 (SUB and Building E) remain available for use.

New BC Hydro Level 2 and DC Fast electric vehicle chargers are ready for use at UFV! You can find the chargers at the Abbotsford (SUB-Lot 10) and Chilliwack Campuses (Trades and Technology Centre-Lot 1). More information below.

Pay parking for electric vehicles (EV)

EV may park in EV stalls with a valid student or employee permit, or pay-by-space at any ticket meter.

Only plug-in EVs are approved by UFV to park in designated EV parking stalls.

Please note:

  • Vehicles must be plugged in and actively charging (for a maximum of 4 hours) when parked in an EV spot. Vehicles must be moved to a regular parking stall when charging is complete.
  • The EV charging station cannot be used for loading and unloading, temporary parking or as a pick-up or drop-off area.

How to charge

ChargePoint chargers

In order to use the charging stations, you need to register for a ChargePoint account.

Waitlist feature

If all of the charging stations are full when you arrive on campus, you can get in line on the waitlist for the next available charging station. Simply tap in at the charging station and when it’s your turn, you’ll get a notification by text message or email (depending on your ChargePoint settings), telling you that a port is available to you. You can respond in one of three ways:

  1. Accept and go plug in immediately.
  2. Snooze to hold your place in line but let the next person jump ahead of you.
  3. Leave the waitlist to be removed from the waitlist entirely, in case you don’t need to charge.

Visit the ChargePoint FAQ for additional information on the waitlist feature.

Charging Fees

Beginning July 2026, new revenue-neutral fees for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations will be applied across UFV's ChargePoint Stations. The fee is designed to support the long-term operation and maintenance of campus charging infrastructure while continuing to encourage sustainable transportation choices among students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

FAQs

What are the new fees?

Rate Type Level 2 DC Fast Charger
Business Hours (8:00-17:00) $0.25/kWh $0.30/kwh

Evenings, Weekends, Holidays

$0.20/kWh $0.30/kWh
Idle Fees (Business Hours Only) $0.20/min after 4 hrs $0.20/min (starting 5 mins after charging completes).

When do the new fees come into effect?

The fees will come into effect on July 1st, 2026

Why aren’t the stations free anymore?

We would like to continue making it easy to choose sustainable transportation options. To keep up with the operational demands of providing EV charging, fees are needed to ensure charging stations remain financially sustainable over time.

The fees will offset costs associated with electricity consumption, equipment maintenance, software management, and infrastructure improvements.

Why are the fees lower during the evening?

There is lower demand chargers in the evening; lower fees during these times will encourage users to charge during off-peak hours and ensure more people have access to the chargers.

What about the BC Hydro Chargers at UFV?

The new fees apply to the UFV-owned ChargePoint Stations only. The BC Hydro Chargers are owned and operated by BC Hydro and have their own fees that may differ from the ChargePoint Stations.

What is an idle fee?

An idle fee is applied when your car is fully charged and your car is no longer actively charging, or if your car has been on the charger for over four hours. The idle fee encourages users to disconnect and let other EV users access the chargers.

Will parking permits still be required?

Yes, the fees to use the stations are in addition to parking permits.

Is there anything I (the EV driver) will need to change?

No, the fees will automatically be updated, and you will be charged through the credit card associated with your account. We do encourage you to keep good charging etiquette in mind:

    • drivers should ensure they are using the stations only when needed
    • drivers should move their car if not actively charging
    • drivers should be gentle with the cords and charging port, keeping them off the ground and tangle free

These steps our community can take to help extend the station life and avoid long outages due to repairs.

What is temporary dispensation?

You may notice new stickers on the EV Charging stations acknowledging the meter has been granted temporary dispensation:

This device is temporarily authorized to be used for the purpose of obtaining the basis of a charge for electricity, under terms and conditions established by Measurement Canada"

This means that UFV is allowed by the BC government to apply a fee for the sale of electricity.
