Experiential learning and research opportunities

As a student in the Regional & Community Planning program at UFV, you have the opportunity to participate in practicums or internships either locally or globally, as well as applied studio courses in your third and fourth years. These applied internships and courses provide you with learning experiences in real world environments, allowing you to graduate with tangible skills you can transfer into your career. 

Over the years UFV has built relationships both locally and internationally with planners and grass-roots planning organizations; government officials including local municipalities; the Indigenous communities and agricultural communities in the Fraser Valley; the local business community in Abbotsford; and Universities located in urban and rural communities across the globe. This foundation provides incoming BRCP students with a wide breadth of experiential learning opportunities based on their interests.

Possible practicum and internship placements 

  • Local municipalities such as the City of Abbotsford, Pitt Meadows, City of Langley, Fraser Valley Regional District, and Private Planning Consulting Firms
  • UFV East African Internship Program (Made possible by the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships) includes planning related placements related to NGOs, UN Habitat – United Nations Human Settlements Programme and urban research programmes.

 Software skills 

You will have the opportunity to learn a variety of software through the BRCP program and elective courses such as ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, and Sketchup!

Research opportunities

Students in the BRCP will have the opportunity to gain research experience on a wide diversity of research projects - both locally and globally. Most notably, faculty are working on research in the fields of long-term environmental change and sustainable environmental, urban, and economic development.
