What are microcredentials?

Microcredentials are short, flexible learning experiences that help you build specific, job-ready skills — fast. Designed to be completed in weeks, they’re perfect for students and professionals looking to upskill, reskill, or explore new career paths without committing to a full program.

Developed with industry partners, UFV microcredentials focus on practical, in-demand skills that employers are looking for right now.

How do microcredentials work?

Each microcredential earns you a digital badge that showcases the skills you’ve learned. Badges are verifiable, personalized, and easy to add to LinkedIn, your resumé, or portfolio — helping you stand out to employers.
Some badges may be stacked toward a larger credential, giving you flexible learning pathways for long-term growth.

Frequently asked questions

Microcredentials are shorter courses that provide flexible learning paths. These courses cover specific topics that are recognized by professional industries and employers. Moreover, the skills you learn in these courses can provide you with the applied skills and confidence to succeed in your goals, whether you you’re a student, industry professional, or new the workplace.

Unlike traditional courses, microcredentials are not a part of a credited program but instead offers certification for specific skills earned through the microcredential. That is why each microcredential offers flexible learning paths and shorter completion times. However, certain microcredentials can be stackable to earn more certifications.

Moreover, each completed microcredential will earn you a digital badge which can be shared to your resume and LinkedIn profile. The more courses you take, the more opportunities you’ll have to build upon your current badges.

Anyone can take a microcredential course. However, certain microcredential courses cover specific topics related to a specific industry or organization’s needs. Please visit the specific program’s page for more information.

Microcredentials are delivered in different formats depending on the program. Some are fully online, others are face-to-face, and some use a hybrid model that combines both.

Microcredentials are open to anybody and do not require academic admission requirements. However, certain courses offered in partnership with external organizations may have specific requirements. Please visit the specific program’s page for more information.

All microcredentials are stackable. As more courses become available, more microcredentials will become stackable.

Additionally, certain microcredentials can be applied to academic programs through the PLAR (Prior Learning and Assessment) program.

A digital badge is a certification that is unique and encrypted for each individual who completes a microcredential course. Badges are recognized by the government and verify the skills that were gained through the course.

Digital badges will be shared through the online service, CanCred. Once a badge is on CanCred, it can be shared to LinkedIn profiles, resumes, and social media platforms.
