Program description
Businesses in every sector rely on information technology (IT) professionals to stay competitive. Prepare to meet that demand with UFV's intensive, two-year Computer Information Systems (CIS) diploma. You'll gain the skills to work in the IT sector, supporting both single and networked systems.
Your courses cover a range of key areas, so you graduate both versatile and valuable. You'll learn network and database administration and web design, and explore network security, information systems management, and programming. Business and communications courses build the soft skills you need to succeed.
Go to the program outline in the UFV Academic Calendar.
Expect a strong mix of theory and practical skill development. You'll build your skills through hands-on work in UFV's well-equipped computer labs, in lectures, workshops, and projects, delivered in a mix of in-person, online, and blended formats.
As a co-op student, you'll alternate between study semesters and full-time paid work terms in a CIS-focused role. Learn more about UFV's co-op program.
If you want to take your skills further, you may also consider the Computer Information Systems bachelor's degree.
Career expectations
When you embark on an IT career, you have many career options. You could focus on software development, systems analysis and design, or UX/UI design. You could become a web designer, database developer, or IT project manager. Other career avenues include computer security, network design and administration, end-user support, or technology management.
The BC Labour Market Outlook lists several IT professions as high-opportunity occupations with strong projected employment and wages, including information systems analysts and consultants, software engineers and designers, and web designers and developers.
The IT marketplace is always changing. To make sure graduates have in-demand skills, the School of Computing meets with an advisory committee of industry experts from both the private and public sectors. Their expertise helps shape courses and programs to keep them current and innovative.
