Program description
UFV offers a minor and extended minor in Media and Communication Studies as part of the Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Learn about the complex relationships between media, communication, and society, and gain insight into a variety of topics such as the history of communication, advertising, music, journalism, digital design, and artistic expression.
In your first and second year, you are introduced into communication theory and discuss the role media plays in the lives of Canadians. You also become familiar in social research methodology, and examine topics ranging from public relations and advertising to journalism in Canada.
In your third and fourth year, you are exposed to issues relating to the design and distribution of online media, and investigate theories of aesthetics, identity, and subcultures in areas such as art, film, music, and photography.
By the end of the program, you are able to critically analyze contemporary artistic expression and cultural representations and have gained a deep understanding of how people engage with media, adding a new set of skills to complement your creative practice.

You can work in a four-, eight-, or twelve-month work term, full-time or part-time, and can declare co-op as an option on your transcript. Attend a co-op info session or drop in at the Career Centre located in the SUB, room S3123.
Career expectations
In a global knowledge economy, skilled communicators are in hot demand. A BFA with a minor or extended minor in Media and Communication Studies can help you find work with design or marketing agencies, copywriting firms, publishers, community organizations, and production companies. You may also work in gaming, web design, interactive media, creative writing, film production, or public relations. Or you may opt to pursue graduate studies.
There are no shortage of opportunities: Creative BC reports that the motion pictures and video industry is booming, with annual revenues for film, TV, and digital media adding up to $3.4 billion. As for the interactive and digital media sector, it is one of the fastest growing in B.C., at a rate of 11% per year. The industry features average salaries of $84K and $2.3 billion in sales.
WorkBC also lists advertising, marketing, and public relations jobs as top opportunity occupations. With median salaries of $30.77 an hour — going up to $33.65 an hour for managers — 6,900 openings are expected in B.C. from now to 2025.
