But as mainstream media becomes increasingly polarized and as technology makes it easier than ever for anyone to produce “news “, false stories are spreading faster and more widely than ever before. The growth of fake news has a serious cultural impact. What are the challenges authors, editors, and consumers face in trying to identify, manage, and stop the spread of fake news stories.

Staying mentally well and supporting each other through hard times | Dr. Leah Douglas
This session focuses on maintaining and improving our mental wellness, especially during challenging times. We discuss what depression is, how to prevent and manage it, and how to support ourselves and loved ones when struggling.  There are many opportunities in nature, our communities, our social networks, and other professional relationships to strengthen our mental health. This session is helpful to anyone who cares about someone with depression - a partner, an adult child, a friend, or ourselves. We all feel overwhelmed at times, and need practical, kind, and gentle supports. 

Dementia in community living | Dr. Alison Phinney
Join Professor Alison Phinney from the UBC School of Nursing and Director of the Centre for Research on Personhood in Dementia for a meaningful nature walk and conversation. Through stories from her work as a nurse and researcher, she will explore what it is like to live with dementia and highlight the importance of meaningful activity, social inclusion, and community connections in supporting people to live well and creating stronger, more inclusive communities.

So you need to go to ER - Now what? | Devon McLellan
This teaching session will help prepare you for an emergency department visit by explaining what to expect, what happens after you arrive, and how the triage process works. Participants will learn the most important information to share with the healthcare team and receive helpful tips and resources to make their emergency care experience as smooth as possible.

Building community & plant climate resilience together through intergenerational learning | Dr. Lauren Erland

In this presentation we will discuss research in the BERRI Lab and how integration of intergenerational learning and research both supports impact of research, while enriching the research process for learners and researchers.

Our berry and food production systems are increasingly under strain from environmental, economic and societal pressures. In the berry lab we are working to enhance resilience of our berry horticultural systems and ecosystems through interdisciplinary research and integrating knowledge systems. While we often focus on the scientific outcomes of research in the lab, these outcomes are only achieved through the people conducting this research,  sharing their knowledge, and making changes for impact in their communities.
