Program description
Pair your core discipline with studies in statistics and gain the power to extract meaningful insights from data sets — a sought after skill in the 21st-century job market.
Select a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science to customize the focus of your degree. Then, couple your Mathematics minor with a major or minor in another discipline to create a unique learning path specific to your interests (see BA requirements, see BSc requirements).
Applied Statistics minor
The Applied Statistics minor is designed to equip you with basic competence in the applied statistical modeling and analysis techniques needed in modern business, industry, policy research, and other careers. It is especially relevant if your primary specialization is in a field where a strong working knowledge of applied statistics is required or beneficial for employment or further studies.
After gaining an understanding of basic statistics and applied regression analysis, you choose four out of 10 available advanced statistics classes to hone your skills. The program requires 10 lower-level credits and 15 upper-level credits for completion. View full program requirements.
Mathematics minor (Statistics option)
Explore the study of calculus, linear algebra, and other mathematical subjects while also gaining an understanding of probability and statistics.
After surveying a range of mathematical topics (100-200 level), you choose 15 upper-level statistics credits to complete your minor. The program requires 21-23 lower-level credits and 15 upper-level credits. View full program requirements.
Career expectations
Pair your core interest with studies in statistics to advance your career options. As data becomes increasingly ubiquitous, professionals able to extract information and draw conclusions from data are steadily in demand. In-fact, according to Employment and Social Development Canada, demand for statisticians grew almost 50% between 2008 and 2014.
Your statistical skills can be put to use in almost every field, including:
- Education
- Sports
