What is Unreal Engine 5 (UE5)?
Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) is one of the world’s leading real-time 3D creation tools, developed by Epic Games. It is widely used in the game industry, but also in film, animation, architecture, virtual production, simulation, VR, and interactive media.
UE5 allows creators to build immersive worlds, interactive experiences, games, animations, and cinematic environments using industry-standard tools. Major studios around the world use Unreal Engine for both entertainment and visualization projects.
At UFV, students learn UE5 through hands-on, project-based learning focused on creativity, production workflows, and real-world applications.
What Can You Do with UE5? What Careers Can It Lead To?
UE5 skills can open pathways into many creative and technical industries.
Games
UE5 is widely used to create video games, from small indie projects to large studio productions. Students interested in games may explore paths such as game design, level design, environment art, gameplay prototyping, technical art, and indie development.
Animation and Cinematics
UE5 can be used to create real-time animations, cinematic scenes, character moments, trailers, and short films. This connects to roles in cinematic design, animation layout, previs, virtual camera work, and real-time storytelling.
VFX and Virtual Production
UE5 is increasingly used in film and television for virtual sets, real-time backgrounds, previs, and production visualization. Students may explore pathways in virtual production, VFX visualization, technical art, and real-time scene creation.
VR, AR, and Interactive Media
UE5 supports immersive experiences such as virtual reality, augmented reality, interactive installations, simulations, and training environments. This connects to careers in XR development, immersive media design, interactive experience design, and simulation.
Architecture and Design Visualization
UE5 is used to create realistic walkthroughs, interactive interiors, urban environments, and architectural presentations. This can support work in architectural visualization, interior visualization, real estate media, and spatial experience design.
Simulation and Training
UE5 can also be used outside entertainment for education, health, safety, industrial training, and research simulations. Students may apply these skills to interactive training tools, serious games, educational media, and applied visualization.
Independent Creative Practice
UE5 also gives students the tools to develop their own projects, including games, animations, VR experiences, digital environments, and interactive stories. This is especially useful for portfolio development, entrepreneurship, and creative research.
Possible career paths include:
- Game Designer
- Level Designer
- Environment Artist
- Technical Artist
- 3D Generalist
- VR / XR Developer
- Virtual Production Artist
- Cinematic Artist
- Interactive Media Designer
- Architectural Visualization Artist
- Simulation Designer
- Indie Game Developer
Because UE5 is used across multiple industries, students develop transferable skills that can apply to games, film, visualization, immersive experiences, and emerging digital media fields.
Student Work Reel
At UFV, we learn by building projects.
Students develop practical production experience through collaborative and individual work using Unreal Engine 5. For example, in MEDA 280 students develop a simple first-person shooter project from scratch, learning core concepts such as level design, gameplay logic, environment creation, and production workflows.
Students also create VR environments, interactive experiences, animations, and real-time scenes as part of coursework and experimentation within the Media Arts program.
This project-based approach helps students build portfolios while developing creative and technical problem-solving skills.
What Does It Mean That UFV Is an Unreal Academic Partner (Silver)?
UFV is an official Unreal Academic Partner recognized by Epic Games, currently at the Silver level. In addition, the program includes two Unreal Authorized Instructors.
This partnership recognizes institutions that demonstrate strong Unreal Engine teaching practices, industry alignment, and commitment to high-quality real-time media education.
Benefits for students include:
- Access to industry-standard workflows and tools
- Learning from certified Unreal instructors
- Access to Epic Games educational resources
- ArtStation Pro accounts
- Credits for Fab marketplace assets
- Exposure to professional production pipelines
