Campus Recreation

Policies & regulations

UFV is committed to providing a civil and safe environment that is respectful of the rights, responsibilities, well-being, and dignity of all of its members. Use of the UFV Athletics and Campus Recreation facilities is a privilege. Any user who does not adhere to guidelines may experience a loss of privileges and access to the facility. To ensure our members and guests enjoy a safe and positive experience it is expected that all users:

  • Acts civilly and safely towards oneself and others.
  • Adheres to the policies, procedures, and guidelines set by the department and the university while using our facilities, services, and programs.
  • Be respectful of all staff, facilities, and equipment.
  • Holds an active XplorRecreation account and signs a waiver/assumption of risk before starting any activity. Review forms here: Facility Waiver

Rules & expectations

  • All facility users must check-in at Client Service desk (E150).
  • All participants must read and sign a Facility Waiver,  form before participating in UFV Athletics and Campus Recreation activities, programs or membership activation.
  • All Peak Pass members are required to swipe their CampusCard/Alumni Card - every visit and when signing out equipment.

  • Appropriate fitness attire is required during all participation, including:
    • Shirts: upper body clothing covering full-torso
    • Footwear: non-marking, athletic closed-toe shoes are required at all times
    • No denim and items that have metal fasteners or buckles are permitted
  • Be cautious of your belongings. UFV will not be responsible for any loss, theft or damage to personal property.
  • Clean up after yourself.
  • Children under the age of 17 (proof of age may be required) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian member unless prior approval by UFV Athletic and Campus Recreation.
  • Cell phone use is not permitted while using equipment or during activities.
  • Food and drink is not permitted in activity areas. Water is permitted in a sealed non-glass container.
  • Inform staff if you experience dizziness, fatigue or acute pain; immediately stop what you are doing and report to Client Services.
  • No loitering in activity areas.
  • No photos/videos. Photos and videos are not permitted unless there is prior approval.
  • Only service animals are permitted to enter the facility—all others are prohibited 
  • Participants who are considered under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be permitted access.

General rules and expectations

  • At peak times, there is a 30-minute limit on cardio equipment.
  • Cardio machines, equipment and weights should be used with care, and safely in the manner it was intended.
  • Do not lean weights against other machines, walls or mirrors.
  • Dropping plates, dumbbells, and weight stacks can cause injury and damage equipment, and will not be tolerated.
  • Keep functional training equipment in designated area.
  • No bags or other items on the floor. Use storage provided or lockers in the change room.
  • Private personal training not permitted without permission in advance from Campus Recreation and Wellness, Program Manager.
  • Report injuries, damage to equipment, or other concerns promptly to Facility Attendant or other staff members.
  • Return weights to the racks after use. Do not leave them for someone else to put away.
  • Turn ringers off on cell phones or other communication devices. Calls or texts may be taken outside the Fitness Centre.
  • Use of a sweat towel is recommended.
  • Use safety collars and a spotter.
  • Wipe down all machines, benches and mats after every use with disinfectant spray.

Player Code of Conduct

The purpose of the rec sports at UFV is for participants to enjoy a fun, safe and fair playing environment, while promoting healthy lifestyle options and social engagement. By voluntarily participating in Campus Recreation sports, activities and events, ALL participants agree to the following code of conduct:  

  • Demonstrating self-control and proper conduct is required at all times.
  • Good sportsmanship and fair play are expected at all times. Unsportsmanlike conduct or other specified yet inappropriate behaviour, occurring during the Campus Recreation activities will not be tolerated, and such actions will be handled by the Recreation Program Coordinator immediately. This includes, but not limited to:
    • any act of physical assault, verbal assaults, threats and attempts to intimidate;
    • throwing of articles in a deliberate or aggressive manner, aggressively approaching another individual, or striking another individual;
    • attempting to prod or incite violence in others in or around the Facility.
  • To treat the Facilities and equipment with care and respect in a manner that ensures their maintenance is kept and use is preserved.
  • Participants under the influence of alcohol or drugs are prohibited to participate in any recreational activity or have access to recreational facilities on the UFV Campus.
  • All participants of organized drop-in and sports leagues must be familiar with the sport rules and guiding principles of rec sport.

Those demonstrating inappropriate behaviour or language will be declined entry or be asked to leave. Their membership may be cancelled. They may be banned from the Facility.

  • All non-UFV equipment must be approved for use by Client Services.
  • All participants must check-in at Client Services prior to start of activity.
  • Courts are based on a first come, first served basis.
  • Do not prop any outside doors open.
  • Equipment may be signed out at Client Service desk.
    • Setup and takedown is the responsibility of the person requesting equipment; assistance will be provided by Client Services.
  • Hanging on the rims and nets is not permitted.
  • Tape is not allowed on gym floors or walls.

  • All participants must activate their PerfectMind account in person, at the Client Service desk (E150) prior to visiting a fitness class. If you are attending a class in Chilliwack email campusrec@ufv.ca.
  • All participants must sign a waiver or informed consent prior to attending a fitness class in person at the client service desk at E150 in Abbotsford or with your fitness instructor in Chilliwack.
  • Once your account is setup you will receive and email to setup an online account. You will need to do this as you are required to sign-up or RSVP prior to attending any fitness class.
  • You will still need to show your UFV Student Card to the fitness instructor at start of the class
  • Check with a doctor prior to starting a new fitness routine.
  • Wear proper athletic clothing and footwear must be worn (when applicable) and bring a water bottle.

Prior to participation, all users must attend an orientation on usage guidelines and common risks involved in strength training, the proper execution of various exercises, and the possible consequences if proper technique is not performed.

All users must have signed a UFV Assumption of Risk, Release of Liability and Indemnity Agreement waiver or have pre-approved facility usage insurance.

  • Banned substances, alcohol, drugs, and all forms of tobacco are not permitted in the activity space.
  • Cell phone use is not permitted while training in the facility. 
  • Do not drop or throw dumbbells.
  • Do not engage in horseplay, or use of loud or offensive language.
  • Do not set plates down on the floor or lean them against equipment or walls.
  • Food, drinks, and chewing gum are not permitted in activity area.
  • Have a spotter present, when necessary.
  • Jewellery such as loose necklaces, bracelets, and hanging earrings should not be worn.
  • Move the weights from the racks to the bar only.
  • No equipment is to be stored or placed in front of garage door when not in direct use.
  • No person is allowed to work out by themselves without pre-approval.
  • No person under the age of 16 may be in area, unless approved by on-duty supervisors or Operations Coordinator.
  • Participants who are considered under the influence will not be permitted to use this space.
  • Personal items such as bags, jackets and textbooks are not permitted in the space; please use lockers provided in change rooms.
  • Please remove plates from bar, when not in use.
  • Return dumbbells to the rack in their proper order.
  • Show respect for equipment and facilities at all times.
  • Supervisors are not responsible for users’ personal belongings, lost or stolen items.
  • The on-duty supervisors have authority over all weight room conduct and use of equipment, and may expel any user from the facility for failure to follow instructions.
  • Use bumper plates on the platforms for power-oriented exercises.
  • Use of locks or collars at the end of the bars is required.
  • Users are to wear proper training attire, particularly shirts and athletic shoes, at all times.
  • Users must immediately report any facility-related injury, facility or equipment irregularity to the on-duty supervisors or Operations Coordinator.
  • Water and sports drinks are permitted in sealed non-glass containers.
  • Wipe down bikes, benches, mats and other equipment after each use.
