Biography

Dr. Carlos Vilchis is an educator, researcher, and entrepreneur specializing in real-time computer graphics, digital humans, and virtual production. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Tecnológico de Monterrey, where his research focused on artificial intelligence for human digitization and advanced techniques in real-time graphics. His work was recognized internationally through an Epic MegaGrant from Epic Games supporting his innovations in AI-driven facial tracking.

In industry, Dr. Vilchis worked as a Virtual Production and Motion Capture Technical Director at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), contributing to engineering advancements in motion capture and real-time production. These innovations were part of the groundbreaking efforts that received a 2022 Engineering Emmy Award for excellence in virtual production technology.

As an educator, he has designed and taught courses in computer graphics, animation, and virtual production at institutions including Humber College, University of the Fraser Valley, Tecnológico de Monterrey, and Emily Carr University of Art + Design. His teaching integrates theory with hands-on practice, enabling students to master real-time workflows, LED wall production, camera tracking, and photogrammetry. He has been instrumental in developing new curricula that prepare students for careers at the intersection of technology and storytelling.

As an entrepreneur, Dr. Vilchis founded HCG Technologies, the exclusive distributor of Vicon motion capture in Latin America, expanding access to advanced performance capture systems for universities and studios. He also leads Eugenia Digital Humans, a research venture dedicated to next-generation character technology, and established the Virtual Production Academy, an Epic Games–authorized training center with operations in Canada and Miami, providing specialized professional training in real-time production.

Committed to global collaboration, Dr. Vilchis created the Latin American Virtual Production Summit, the largest regional event dedicated to knowledge exchange between industry leaders, educators, and artists. His vision is to reduce barriers to advanced digital tools and foster

international partnerships that expand opportunities for students and professionals in Spanish-speaking regions.

Through his combined roles as researcher, educator, and entrepreneur, Dr. Vilchis continues to shape the future of digital storytelling, helping bridge academia and industry while inspiring the next generation of creators in the evolving field of immersive media.
