Project description
This project explores the history of the Italian community that settled in Powell River in the early 1900s, focusing on migration patterns, community development, and relationships with other groups, including Indigenous peoples. Drawing from local newspapers, archival records, and scholarly sources, the research traces everyday life, internal community dynamics, cultural practices, and the contributions of Italian settlers to the growth of Powell River.
Student involvement
The student conducted archival and literature research, reviewing local newspapers, community histories, and academic sources. They documented key themes such as pioneer families, the evolution of neighbourhoods, community organizations, women’s roles, and Italian-Canadian military involvement. Their work contributed detailed findings that support ongoing research into the social history of Powell River’s Italian community.
