Project description
Editing and annotating mid-19th century boundary surveyor records, including the writings of George Gibbs, who documented Stó:lō lands and communities during the 1858 border survey. These journals contain outdated terminology, inaccurate spellings of Stó:lō place names, and references that are difficult for modern readers to interpret. Through careful contextualization and annotation, the project prepared these materials for future publication as accessible and meaningful historical sources that capture the landscape just before the transformative changes of the Fraser Canyon gold rush.
Student involvement
The student edited and annotated a large set of handwritten surveyor journals, contributing 366 detailed footnotes that clarify archaic language, people, places, and historical context.
