email JohnChef John Garrett is an award-winning Red Seal Chef and Assistant Professor of Culinary Arts at the University of the Fraser Valley with more than 35 years of experience in the hospitality industry. As Executive Chef of the renowned Horizons Restaurant, he earned a reputation for culinary excellence, received multiple Best Fine Dining awards, and authored the acclaimed cookbook Horizons. Throughout his career, Chef Garrett has worked with STBC as a Chef Assessor and Training Venue Auditor, served as a culinary judge for Skills Canada competitions, and mentored UFV students to compete successfully at both the provincial and national levels. Recognized as a leader in the profession, he was selected to represent British Columbia in Ottawa, contributing to the development of Canada's Red Seal Occupational Standard for Cooks—helping shape the national benchmark for culinary training and certification. Passionate about developing the next generation of chefs, Chef Garrett provides students with hands-on learning, industry mentorship, and real-world kitchen experience. Through his extensive industry network, commitment to excellence, and decades of leadership in professional kitchens, he prepares graduates with the skills, confidence, and professionalism needed to excel in today's culinary industry.
