‌Complete the Bookkeeping for Small Business program part-time in just six months by registering in six course sections.

All courses are held twice a week in the evening from 6:30-9:30 pm.

Accelerated Bookkeeping for Small Business

Cost: $3337

Enrol full-time to complete the Bookkeeping for Small Business certificate in just 12 weeks. To register in all courses, use the BKKG Block Codes listed beside the section below.

 

The certificate consists of the following courses:

  • Bookkeeping Level I
  • Bookkeeping Level II
  • MS Excel Level I
  • Computerized Accounting Level I (Sage 50)*
  • Computerized Accounting Level II (Sage 50)*
  • Payroll Accounting

*Students may take QuickBooks Level I and II instead of Sage 50 I and II.

Bookkeeping Level I

Cost: $612
Prerequisite: It is advised that students are comfortable with basic Windows operations and are familiar with Excel prior to this course.

This course provides an essential introduction to bookkeeping, including theoretical foundations and hands-on knowledge. Learn how to complete all the functions of the accounting cycle from transaction analysis to closing the books. Topics include the accounting model, basic financial statements, general ledger, and government taxation.

Bookkeeping Level II

Cost: $622
Prerequisite: Bookkeeping Level I with B or better.

Building on the principles covered in Bookkeeping Level I, learn about financial statements preparation, accounts receivable, accounts payable, subsidiary ledgers, bank reconciliations, payroll, GST, PST, HST, trial balances, and year end.

Computerized Accounting Level I (Sage 50)

Cost: $612
Prerequisite: Bookkeeping Level II with B or better.

Integrated bookkeeping/accounting software is a standard for small businesses. This course covers journal entries, purchases/sales orders and quotes, as well as invoicing, receipts and payments for payables, receivables, and inventory. Familiarize yourself with the reporting and tax features provided by accounting software. Payroll is not covered.

Students should be competent in computer skills before taking this course.

Computerized Accounting Level II (Sage 50)

Cost: $572
Prerequisite: Computerized Accounting Level I with B or better.

Build on what you have learned in Computerized Accounting Level I and learn about banking, payroll, projects, inventory, adjustments and closing. This course does not teach accounting fundamentals.

QuickBooks Level I

Cost: $612
Prerequisite: Bookkeeping Level II with B or better.

Learn how to manage billing, estimates, collections, inventory management, and payroll using QuickBooks accounting software.

Students may take QuickBooks Level I and II instead of Computerized Accounting (Sage 50) Level I and II to complete the Bookkeeping for Small Business certificate. Students should be competent in computer skills before taking this course.

QuickBooks Level II

Cost: $572
Prerequisite: QuickBooks Level I with B or better.

Build on the skills you developed in QuickBooks Level I. Learn how to create and manage a new company, including company setup and payroll and inventory transactions.

Excel Level I

Cost: $347

Learn how to use MS Excel to create spreadsheets that include AutoSum, conditional formatting, formulas, and absolute addresses. Develop or edit spreadsheets using a variety of MS Excel attributes and fine-tune your new skills by creating charts. This course is designed for people with prior Excel experience. We encourage students with no such experience to take Excel Basics for the Office.

Students with credit for ABT 137 or RM 06 Spreadsheets: Excel will receive credit for this course provided software version is the same.

Payroll Accounting

Cost: $572
Prerequisite: Bookkeeping Level I with B or better.

Learn to manage a payroll accounting system, with an emphasis on the calculation of earnings and deductions to conform to federal and provincial laws and accounting best practices. Find out how to complete forms required by law and the necessary accounting entries performed as part of basic payroll recordkeeping. This is a general course that is not specific to any one business.

Bookkeeping Practicum

Cost: TBD
Prerequisite: Completion of the Bookkeeping for Small Business certificate.

Participate in a two-week work practicum with a local employer to apply what you have learned in class and gain experience. To qualify, you must have successfully completed all previous coursework and grade requirements. Transportation to the practicum site is your responsibility and may require travel outside your area of residence.

Practicum is not a requirement for certificate completion.
