Prerequisites and Corequisites

About prerequisites and corequisites

prerequisite is a requirement that you must meet before you take a course, while a corequisite is a course that you must take at the same time. You may take some requirements as either a prerequisite or corequisite.

Because UFV wants you to succeed, prerequisite and corequisite requirements have been established to ensure you are adequately prepared for your courses in both knowledge and skill.

You can find pre- and corequisite requirements in the Course Descriptions section of the current UFV calendar. Review requirements prior to registering, to ensure that you are eligible to take each course.

Unless otherwise stated, a minimum grade of C- is required for prerequisite courses.

What happens when a prerequisite is missing?

You must meet prerequisites when you register; otherwise, you will receive an error message and will be prevented from registering or waitlisting for the course.

If you are able to resolve the prerequisite problem or obtain a prerequisite waiver, you can try again to register.

How to resolve prerequisite problems

You lack formal prerequisites but believe you have equivalent knowledge:

Contact your instructor and/or Department as they may provide a prerequisite waiver. Please note that some Departments require students to submit an online request form available through the UFV website. Please check with your specific Department for further information.

You believe you have the prerequisites:

Prerequisites are checked against your student computer record. If you believe you have a prerequisite, but are still getting an error message, the prerequisite may be missing from your student record.

  • If a high school grade is missing, submit an official high school transcript to the Office of the Registrar.
  • Placement tests taken at UFV are recorded automatically, three to four weeks after the test is written. If you have taken any external tests, submit the scores to the Office of the Registrar.

Processing can take time. In the meantime, you may need to show your instructor a copy of your transcript/score, and request permission to waive the prerequisite.

A prerequisite course is in progress:

If a required course is in progress at UFV when you register, the system will determine whether or not you meet the prerequisite when your instructor enters your final grade. If you have not met the prerequisite, you will be withdrawn without notice (drop fees may apply).
