Internationally educated applicants (no teaching credential)

Are you internationally educated and interested in becoming a certified teacher in British Columbia, but do not currently hold a teaching credential from another country? This page outlines the steps and resources available to help you begin your path toward applying to UFV’s Bachelor of Education (BEd) program.

Before applying

If you are a prospective domestic student, the Future Students Office (FSO) is your first point of contact for:

You can connect with FSO at info@ufv.ca.

The UFV BEd program currently accepts applications from domestic students only. For information about programs at UFV that are open to international applicants, see or contact UFV International at international@ufv.ca.

If your education was completed outside of Canada, your credentials will be reviewed by UFV Articulation after you apply.

  • The evaluation process typically takes 6–8 weeks.
  • This assessment determines if your previous bachelor degree is equivalent to a 4-year, 120-credit UFV bachelor degree from an accredited post-secondary institution

You can apply to UFV under the Studying for General Interest category and begin taking BEd entrance requirement courses while waiting for your credential assessment.

The entrance requirements for the BEd program are listed in the UFV Academic Calendar. The following courses are often required for applicants with international credentials, depending on the BEd option you choose:

Required for Both Elementary/Middle and Secondary School Options

  • 3 credits of English composition (ENGL 105). If you have ENGL courses as part of your international bachelor degree, this course will be required if your prior education was completed in a country where English is not the primary language, even if your program was delivered in English.
  • 3 credits of English literature (e.g., ENGL 108). If you have ENGL courses as part of your international bachelor degree, this course will be required if your prior education was completed in a country where English is not the primary language, even if your program was delivered in English.
  • 3 credits of Educational Psychology (EDUC 200)
  • 4 credits of Teaching and Learning Practices (EDUC 300)

Additional Requirements for the Elementary/Middle School Option

  • 3 credits of Canadian history (e.g., HIST 101)
  • 3 credits of Canadian geography (GEOG 130)
  • 4 credits of Math for Elementary School Teachers (MATH 105)

To help you plan effectively, use UFV Equivalencies for Course Requirements. It includes:

  • self-assessment worksheets for each BEd option and stream,
  • guidance on how to evaluate your existing coursework, and
  • course subjects that do not meet entrance requirements.

This resource will help you determine which courses to complete while your credentials are under review.

After admission and credential review

Once you are admitted to UFV and your credentials have been assessed by UFV Articulation, you may book an appointment with a School of Education Advisor to review any remaining entrance requirements and plan your path to applying for the BEd program.
