EDUC 480: Designs for Teaching French as a Second Language (FSL)
This course provides an overview of current theories and pedagogies related to teaching K-12 Core French and French Immersion (FI) in BC. Students will deepen their understanding of second language acquisition and expand their repertoire of teaching approaches for FSL classrooms. This course will be of interest to UFV undergraduate and B.Ed. students contemplating a career as a French teacher, to current French teachers who wish to enhance their language proficiencies and teaching practices as well as Education Assistants interested in applying to a teacher education program.
This hybrid model course will be offered in person on the new UFV Mission campus and online using Zoom® video conferencing.

Can I take one course at UFV without being in a program?
If you're not currently a student at UFV and are interested in taking EDUC 480, you can apply to UFV to an admissions category called Studying for General Interest. You can connect with the UFV Future Students Office for more information about these options or completing an application. If you have been admitted into Studying for General Interest, you will need to submit a prerequisite waiver form to request to register for EDUC 480.

Are there bursaries available?
French Education bursaries are available from the BC Ministry of Education and Childcare to cover registration costs for students who successfully complete the EDUC 480 course. Please refer to the Bursaries for B.C. Educators – University Courses in French website.
Does the EDUC 480 course meet requirements for a TQS Category 5+ Upgrade?
For K-12 Teachers who are pursuing a salary upgrade to Category 5+, the EDUC 480 course meets the TQS requirements for 3 credits of an Integrated (30 credit) Program. Please follow this link for more information from the Teacher Qualification Service (TQS).
What is the language of instruction in EDUC 480?
The EDUC 480 course is offered in French. It is therefore recommended that students have a sufficient level of French proficiency (an Intermediate French proficiency associate certificate, Advanced French proficiency certificate, French minor, extended minor or major from UFV MOLA, or a DELF B2 certificate) to participate in this course and teach in French Immersion Programs. However, support will be provided for students at a lower proficiency level (one of MOLA 200-level courses or DELF B1) who plan to teach Core French and are willing to work hard, take risks, and improve their French skills through the course.

Below are the DELF equivalencies to courses you may have already taken in French at UFV. It is recommended that students have a sufficient level of French proficiency (an Intermediate French proficiency associate certificate, Advanced French proficiency certificate, French minor, extended minor or major from UFV MOLA or a DELF B2 certificate) to participate in this course and teach in French Immersion Programs.
