Admissions and program deadlines

No exceptions to the application deadline are permitted. Applications for the next UFV BEd intake open on October 1st

No, as the deadline for degree completion and EDUC 200 and 300 is April of the same year as the BEd intake. For example, if you need to complete courses for your degree in Summer 2026, you will be applying for the Fall (August) 2027 BEd intake. There are no exceptions for this deadline. Applications for the Fall 2027 BEd intake will open on October 1st, 2026. Please refer to the BEd Admissions Checklists under Prospective Students for more information.

Admissions and program requirements

You need to have a recognized Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 120 credits.

  • Applicants to either option will require one English composition course, one course in English literature, EDUC 200, and EDUC 300.
  • For the Elementary/Middle school option, there are eight specific elementary breadth courses which are required and 12 upper-level credits in teachable subject areas.
  • For the Secondary school option, there are specific course requirements related to each one of the four teachable subject areas (social studies, English, sciences, math).

Please see the Academic Calendar for official entrance requirements info. Review UFV Equivalencies for Course Requirements to which UFV courses meet the BEd entrance requirements and self-assessment worksheets.

See Prospective Student Information for Admissions Checklists for specific completion deadlines for the entrance requirements.

Please note that the BEd is currently not open to international applicants.

Applicants from BC: Check if their institution and degree program are listed on the Degree Authorization page of the BC government website.

Applicants across Canada: Each province and territory has a ministry or department of education responsible for education. Check with the respective provincial or territory authority to determine if the institution is authorized to grant credits and degrees.

Applicants outside of Canada: UFV Articulation reviews credentials after an applicant applies to UFV; the process typically takes six to eight weeks.

Use the UFV Equivalencies for Course Requirements information and self-assessment worksheets to compare to your educational record. Applicants typically apply to UFV under Studying for General Interest to start taking BEd entrance requirements that are not part of their previous education, such as 3 credits of Educational Psychology (EDUC 200), 4 credits of Teaching and Learning Practices (EDUC 300), etc. while their credentials are being assessed.

The Future Students Office (FSO) can assist you with exploring options and applying to UFV. You can connect with FSO at info@ufv.ca.

After you are admitted to UFV and UFV Admissions has reviewed your credentials, you can book an appointment with a School of Education Advisor to identify your next steps.

No. The Bachelor of Education (BEd) program at UFV is highly competitive, and all prospective students, including those with graduate-level credentials and/or post-secondary instructor, education assistant, UTTOC, or international teaching experience, are required to apply through the standard admission process and meet the entrance requirements listed in the UFV Academic Calendar. Applications are not considered on an individual exception basis. Your current work experience will count towards your program preparation part of your application. You can find more information under How to Apply and Prospective Student Information.

The UFV BEd program does not accept a recognized three-year degree. Prospective domestic students can reach out to the Future Students Office info@ufv.ca to explore programs or for assistance to apply to UFV to complete a subsequent four-year degree. See Subsequent Degree in the Academic Calendar (scroll down) for more information.

Once admitted to UFV, students can meet with a School of Education Academic Advisor to discuss entrance requirements.

Your application is evaluated for your academic requirements (specific course work), GPA, overall program preparation (experiences), and reference reports. In addition, the Multi Mini Interviews (MMI) will assess non-cognitive dispositions such as critical thinking, an inclusive orientation, and your communication skills.

UFV BEd applicants can take equivalent courses to UFV’s EDUC 200 and EDUC 300. You can find accepted equivalent courses using the BC Transfer Guide. If you are unfamiliar with how to use the BC Transfer Guide, watch this instructional video.

If you're not currently a student at UFV and are interested in taking a few courses (e.g., EDUC 200).

You can apply to UFV to an admissions category:

Review the description for each to determine which is the best fit for you. You can connect with the UFV Future Students Office for more information about these options or completing an application.

If you have completed course prerequisites for EDUC 200 or EDUC 300 at another education institution, you may still register for these classes with permission. Please use the prerequisite waiver form to submit your request.

The Teacher Regulation Branch may accept AP courses for credit for relevant requirements, but only if the AP course is transferred to a recognized post-secondary institution or university. Students who successfully complete specific AP exams may be eligible for university-level transfer credit.

For more information on how AP courses are recognized for transfer credit, visit the Advanced Placement Program and refer to the BC Transfer Guide Advanced Placement Search.

If you have any questions, contact UFV Admissions at admissions@ufv.ca. To send your AP transcript to UFV Admissions, visit College Board Sending AP Scores.

Once you have submitted your application, the Office of the Registrar and the School of Education ensure that all your documents (transcripts, references, and résumé) have been received. If your application is considered "complete", it is forwarded to the School of Education Admissions committee for review. Interviews will then be made available by invitation, typically in late February or early March. Interviews will take place during the first two weeks of March in virtual format. Admission decisions are usually made by mid-April.

All BEd students are required to read, write, and speak at an advanced level of English; therefore, in addition to the general admission requirements, applicants must demonstrate the minimum level of English required of a certified K-12 teacher in B.C. prior to being considered for admission into the BEd. If the applicant's previous education is from a recognized university in a country where English is not the official language of instruction, they will need to achieve the competence standard indicated by either of the tests of English language proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS) that are officially recognized by the B.C. Ministry of Education and Child Care.

  • TOEFL iBT a total score of 95 with a minimum of 23 on reading, listening, and writing, and 25 on speaking, or
  • IELTS Academic: overall band score of 6.5 with no band below 6 and with a minimum of 6.5 on the speaking band

If you plan to use documents that were submitted as part of a previous application, you need to email UFV Admissions (admissions@ufv.ca) by the January 31stdeadline with your UFV application or student number and to inform them so your application is not considered incomplete. Documents will be accepted from the previous year’s intake only, not documentation older than a year. Check your application portal for status updates and contact admissions@ufv.ca for inquiries.

Volunteer or work experience

There is no minimum number of hours that we require. However, we highly recommend that applicants spend time observing, volunteering and/or working in B.C. K-12 public school classrooms before applying. The program is competitive and most successful applicants enter the BEd with extensive experience in public school classroom settings with diverse student populations. This experience introduces you to the complexities of the teaching profession and will help you reflect on your own motivations for wanting to become a teacher. We assess the overall quality of your experiential preparation, so you should provide us with specific details on your resume.

See Tips to Prepare for UFV's Teacher Education Program for more information.

No. However, you need to provide your supervisor’s information and contact along with your self-reported hours so that the School of Education may verify with them if necessary.

No. If you have volunteer or work as any of the following: Education Assistant, Unclassified Teacher Teaching on Call, Letter of Permission Certificate holder, Independent School and Subject-Restricted Certificate holder, etc. you will want to highlight this experience on your resume as part of the program preparation section of your application.

Program options

When exploring BEd options, applicants volunteer in classrooms for elementary/middle schools and secondary schools, ask teachers for informational interviews, and research labour market information. Elementary school teachers are generalists while secondary school teachers are more specialized.

See the WorkBC Labour Market Information for Elementary School Teachers or WorkBC Labour Market Information for Secondary School Teachers for information on earnings, outlook, areas of need, resources, etc.

You can apply to both options; however, you will need to submit two separate applications.

If you choose the Secondary school option, you may ask to be considered for both the humanities and science/math stream.

Program info

Applications for the Bachelor of Education as a second degree open on October 1 and close on January 31. Each cohort begins in mid-August and ends the following mid-June. Courses are typically scheduled in-person Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 3:30pm PT at the Mission campus, though sometimes it is necessary to schedule classes into the evening, on Saturdays, or in the community.

You should be prepared to accept a placement deemed appropriate by the department. While every effort is made to place you in a school within a reasonable distance from your home, you should be prepared to travel up to one hour to your school placement. Coordinators consider many factors in finding the best possible placement, including an environment that optimizes your professional growth. It is the coordinator’s role to make contact with school administration and staff to recruit teacher mentors and facilitate placements. Practicum sites are selected from the Chilliwack, Mission, Abbotsford, Langley, Fraser-Cascade, and Maple Ridge school districts.

Within the Bachelor of Education, there is the Elementary/Middle school option and the Secondary school option. Both run parallel to each other and are 10.5 months in length. There are two practica as part of the program: a 5-week school experience in the fall and a 12-week certifying practicum in the winter semester.

Classes take place in-person at the Mission campus. Online or distance education is not available for the BEd program at UFV.

You may complete your practica in the Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Langley, Fraser-Cascade, or Maple Ridge school districts. You are expected to travel to practicum sites and in-service sessions and must have reliable means of transportation.

No. The BEd program is only offered in a condensed format over 10.5 months, starting in mid-August and completing in mid-June.

The Bachelor of Education consists of three semesters with a total of 55 credits. In 2024/2025, tuition fees and ancillary costs are estimated at approximately $13,000 for all three semesters. Tuition fees will be paid in installments for each one of the three semesters, according to the credit load in each semester.

Books and additional supplies cost approximately $800. The criminal record check (required by the Ministry of Public Safety for all prospective teacher candidates) is currently $28. In addition, you must have a reliable mode of transportation for travel to and from practica sites.

Finally, other expenses you'll need to cover include fees for teacher certification ($250), annual professional memberships ($90), and a professional wardrobe.

No, this is not an option. The UFV BEd program follows a cohort model, meaning that courses and practicums are designed to be integrated for those who are officially enrolled. Seats are reserved exclusively for admitted students, and individual courses or practicum opportunities are not available to those outside the program, even with an evaluation from the Teacher Regulation Branch.

Advising appointments

To make the most of your BEd advising appointment, it’s important to demonstrate professionalism and strong information literacy skills. Here are some steps to help you prepare:

  1. Review Key Resources: Before your appointment, thoroughly review the UFV Academic Calendar, Prospective Student Information, and the Program FAQ. This will help you understand the program requirements and timelines.
  2. Complete a Self-Assessment Worksheet: ReviewUFV Equivalencies for Course Requirements and complete a self-assessment worksheet based on your educational record for your goal program option (and stream for Secondary School Option).
  3. Prepare Your Questions: Write down any questions you have that you could not find answers to online. Having these ready will ensure that you address all your concerns during the appointment.
  4. Choose an Appropriate Time: Schedule your appointment for a time when you can attend from the beginning of the appointment, and be fully focused and present. Avoid distractions, such as driving or multitasking, so you can engage fully in the discussion.
  5. Take Notes: During your appointment, take detailed notes on the key information provided and list any action items you need to follow up on.

International students

The UFV BEd program only accepts applications from domestic students currently.

See Programs Open for Application for a list of UFV programs that are open for applications from prospective international students.

To explore programs at UFV or ask questions, please contact UFV International at international@ufv.ca.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) and Transfer Credit

The BC Transfer Guide may list a first- or second-year course (lower-level) at one post-secondary institution as a third- or fourth-year course (upper-level) at another institution.

Beginning with the Fall 2026 intake, BEd entrance requirements will be based on the course level assigned by the institution where it was originally taken, rather than how it transfers to other institutions.

No, Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) and transfer credit are not available for courses completed in the BEd program, including practicums.

This information is available in Course Outlines under the Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR) section.
